Kenneth John Rettig
1931 - 2019
With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Kenneth J. Rettig, age 87, a resident of Ida Township, MI.
Ken was born in Holgate, OH to Archie and Esther (Eberle) Rettig as the youngest of their four sons. He graduated from Florida High School in Florida, OH where he played varsity basketball for four years. After graduation he worked with his Mom, Dad and Brothers on the family farm until enlisting in 1951 in the United States Air Force to serve his country during the Korean War. He spent one year abroad in Japan doing reconnaissance missions in Japan and Korea. He was a member of the Lynn C. Weeman Post 514 of the American Legion. He returned home to complete his four year term and married the Love of His Life Jo Anne E. Klear on January 23, 1955 while based in Louisiana. After honorable discharge in November of 1955 he began his next mission in life as devoted husband and father having four children over the next six years.
Ken worked as an apprentice carpenter near his hometown eventually becoming a journeyman in the trade building houses. He later joined General Motors in skilled trades as the only carpenter at the Toledo, OH Hydramatic plant for many years before a lung condition forced an early retirement. During the years of family life they lived in Toledo, OH, Temperance, MI and finally realized their dream of buying the farm in Ida where he lived for the rest of his life. He enjoyed working on tractors and equipment, restoring/owning classic cars, woodworking, riding all types of off-road recreational vehicles, boating and buying and selling almost anything. He provided for his family well beyond the necessities buying a cabin in Northern Michigan for snowmobiling and other recreation and later a lake cottage in Reading, MI where family and friends spent countless weekends and summers learning and enjoying watersports and spending time together. After the passing of his wife he was fortunate to find love and companionship again with Barbara J. Adams. For the past 14 years they have enjoyed gardening, yardwork, classic automobile meets, traveling to Amish areas in Ohio, eating out, visiting with family and friends and spending time at the lake.
Ken’s companionship, guidance and caring nature will be forever remembered and missed by his fiancé, family, those close to him, old friends and even others who knew him only casually.
He is survived by his fiancé Barb Adams, his three daughters; twins - Kitty (Mark) Bondy & Kathy LaFayette, Kim (Randy Pierce) Pollins, and son Ken (Stacy) Rettig. He loved his Grandchildren Patrick (Kristin) Bondy, Derek (Katie Abraham) and Zachary (Britnee) LaFayette, Cody (Shelby Motoligin) and Casey Pollins, Seth (Caitlyn) and Kenna Rettig. He also loved being a Great-Grandpa to Desmond, Xander and Sammy Bondy, Madison LaFayette and Asher Rettig.
