Elmer Arthur Zimmerman

1928 - 2019

 

Elmer Arthur Zimmerman, 90 yrs, of Monroe, MI, formerly of Ida, MI, died Wednesday March 13, 2019, in his residence under the care of Great Lakes Hospice. Friends may call at the Capaul Funeral Home, Ida, MI, Friday March 15, 2019, from 2-8PM. He will lie-in-state in Saturday March 16, 2019, in St. Gabriel's Catholic Parish, St. Joseph Catholic Church, Ida, MI, from 10 AM until the Mass of the Resurrection at 11 AM. Fr. Gerard Cupple will officiate. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Ida, MI.

 

Born June 2, 1928, Elmer was the son of Louis and Mary (Saum) Zimmerman. He was Salutatorian of his 1945 Ida High School, Ida, MI, graduating class. Elmer married, Marcella Taylor in 1964 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Ida, MI. Marcella died November 1, 1989. He then married Martha Gorno in 1991 in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Ida, MI. Martha died in 2012. Elmer was a man of many talents working as a tool and die set-up man for Sharon manufacturing and as an Electrician as owner of EZ electric but his true calling was as a Farmer for all of his life. When he was not farming he always had a huge garden starting most of plants in his basement and patio greenhouses. Elmer’s garden started with a few flowers and gradually half the garden was covered with Gladiolus, Zinnias, Coxcombs, Amaryllis and many others. Elmer was also a very successful arborist raising apples, peaches and grapes for sale and English walnuts as well. Elmer’s rose garden was his pride and joy with Tropicanas his favorite. He was 2nd place in Township and County Spelling Bees. Elmer’s' family would like to thank the staff of Brookdale and Great Lakes Caring Hospice for the excellent care shown to Elmer. He was a member of St. Gabriel Catholic Parish, St Joseph Catholic Church, Ida, MI.

 

Survivors include: son, Lawrence (Nadya) Zimmerman II, Donald (Deb) Zimmerman, Robert (Betty) Zimmerman; daughters, Mary Anne (Gary) Davis, Susan (Chet) Stocki, Jane (Dennis) Meyer; 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wives, brothers, Lawrence and Melvin Zimmerman and a sister, Carolyn Lillian Bury.
