Gerald Allen Sweet

1933 - 2017


Gerald “Gary” Allen Sweet 84 years, of Cedarville, MI and formerly Toledo, OH, died Wednesday, January 17, 2018, in Pickerington OH at the home of his daughter. Friends may call at The Capaul Funeral Home Ida, MI, Saturday, January 27, 2018 from 10:00 AM until services begin at 11:00 AM. Pastor Ted Kerr III of Peace Lutheran Church, Ida, MI will officiate the service. Burial will be at Pleasant View Cemetery, Petersburg, MI. A lunch will follow the services at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Ida, MI.


Born December 6, 1933 in Jackson MI, Gary was the son of Delbert and Rosemary Sweet, but after the untimely death of his mother, he was raised by his Aunt Mabel and Uncle Frank Smith in Pigeon, MI.


Gary attended Wayne State School of Mortuary Science, and Graduated in 1955. He married his wife Norma in 1956. He then entered into Military Service and served as a medic in a military hospital in Vicenza, Italy. Upon returning from military service he enrolled and graduated from the University of Toledo in Business Administration in 1962.

Gary worked most of his career in Toledo, Ohio at Champion Spark Plug where he became the Director of Purchasing. He then became co-owner and chief of operations of NM Hansen Company. Gary sold his portion of the business and retired to his home in Port Clinton Ohio, where he enjoyed fishing and golfing. He served on the board for Habitat for Humanity and participated in many projects.


Gary and his wife Norma then moved from Port Clinton to winter in South Carolina and summer in the Upper Peninsula of MI. They moved permanently to Cedarville, MI in 2010, where Gary was very involved in the Lions Club and enjoyed the lake life, fishing, and boating. Most recently he lived with his daughter Lisa Clark and her family in Pickerington, OH.


He is survived by: His daughters Lisa (Rick) Clark, Shannan (Mike) Fastzkie, A Brother Rev. Ted (Alice) Sweet, Sister: Eva Moore, Grandchildren: Julianne Clark, Bess Fastzkie (Andrew) Pinson, Lydia Fastzkie, Nathan (Amanda) Fastzkie, Megan Fastzkie (Michael) Carter, Great Grandchildren: Giovanna Clark, Rylan, Maddox and Kenzie Carter, Addison and Brooklyn Fastzkie. He was preceded in death by: his wife, Norma G. Sweet, grandson, Seth Clark, brother, Laverne Sweet, step-mother, Ruth Sweet and parents Delbert and Rosemary Sweet.
