Gregory Allen Barkenquast

Gregory Allen Barkenquast, 63, of Monroe, MI, formerly of Florida and Ida, passed away peacefully on July 20, 2024, at ProMedica Monroe Regional Hospital after battling kidney disease. Cremation has taken place. Family and friends may visit Capaul Funeral Home (Ida, MI) on Wednesday, August 21, 2024, from 3:00 PM until the Memorial Service at 5:00 PM, officiated by Deacon Mike Hammons. The burial of Greg’s cremains will take place privately at a later date.

Born on May 16, 1961, in Toledo, OH, Greg was the son of Richard and Delores (Osemlak) Barkenquast. He was a 1980 graduate of Ida High School, alongside his siblings Mark and Marian Barkenquast. Greg spent much of his life between his hometown of Ida, Michigan, and Florida. He proudly served as a volunteer firefighter for the Ida Volunteer Fire Department. In 2004, Greg took over ownership of The Hayloft in Ida, MI, until retiring to Fort Myers Beach, Florida, in 2014. After six years in Florida, he returned to Ida in 2020 to be closer to his daughter, Jaja babies, and other family members. Greg was in the process of reviving his family’s antique and refurbishing store before suffering a stroke in September 2021. Due to complications from the stroke and kidney disease, Greg spent his last few years in the care of Seacrest Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. He enjoyed frequent visits from his daughter Aerielle, brother Mark, and friend Henry, as well as phone calls from friends and family. No matter where he resided, Greg was loved and cherished his community in return. The family extends their deepest gratitude to all who aided in Greg's life journey, as well as to the staff of Seacrest for their dedicated care.

Survivors include his life partner, Scott Reinhardt; daughter, Aerielle Barkenquast; son, Taylor Bacarella; Jaja babies, Nevaeh, MaKena, and Bentley; siblings, Michelle (Jim) Stengel, Mark (Cesar), Ted, and Mike; sisters-in-law Diane, and Anne Barkenquast, Renee Reddy, Colleen Peterson; and many nieces and nephews. Greg was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Rick and John Barkenquast; sister Marian Barkenquast; niece Asia Moffatt and was followed in death by his older brother Geary, who passed on July 27, 2024.
