Mary Ibasfalean Szymkowiak

August 11, 1928 - February 15, 2025

It is with heavy hearts and cherished memories that we announce the passing of Mary Ibasfalean Szymkowiak, who peacefully departed this life on February 15, 2025, at the age of 96. Mary was a beloved sister, aunt, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, devoted family member, and a dear friend to many.

Born at home on August 11, 1928, in Ottawa Lake, Michigan, Mary was the daughter of Cleonic and Virginia (Vlach) Ibasfalean. One of eight children, she was raised with strong values and a love for family, which remained a guiding light throughout her life.

Mary married the love of her life, Ernest Szymkowiak, in 1973, and together they built a

beautiful life and were rarely seen apart. Ernie predeceased her in 2013, and Mary often spoke of him with love and affection.

Mary loved to fish, garden, and farm, and was taught building skills at a young age by her father. She went on to build many houses, including the house she lived in until she departed this life. She passed these skills to all three of her sons, who became skilled builders as well. Mary worked at Dura Corporation in Toledo for 30 years before retiring in 1992. She will be remembered for her strong work ethic, energetic nature, remarkable capabilities, and sense of humor. Her presence brought joy and comfort to those around her, and she left an indelible mark on the hearts of all who knew her.

Mary is survived by three sons, Russel Fields, Michael (Rhonda) Field, and Lucas Field; four grandchildren, Michelle (Ryan), Rebecca, Jenny (Todd), and Rachel (Barry); and 11 great-grandchildren. Mary is preceded in death by her siblings Daniel, George, Lester, John, Edna, Helen, and Olivia, and by her beloved grandson, Rusty Fields.

The family will be receiving friends on Tuesday, February 25, from 3 - 7 pm at Capaul Funeral Home, 8216 Ida West Road in Ida, Michigan. A celebration of Mary's life will be held on Wednesday, February 26 at 11 am at Capaul. Family and friends are invited to gather and share memories, stories, and love as we honor her extraordinary life.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to St Jude Children’

Research Hospital in Mary's memory.
